The paper presents the design of a disk milling cutter with indexable inserts used for machining the shaped surfaces of wheelsets. A theoretical analysis of the machined surface microgeometry was performed, establishing the relationships between feed rate, number of teeth, cutting edge geometry and the residual height for turn-milling (angles in the plan, radius at the IIs vertex). A mathematical model has been developed for dependence of kinematic clearance angles during up- and down-milling on the design parameters of the milling cutter and machining conditions. A mathematical model has also been developed for dependence of the cross-sectional dimensions of the undeformed chip on the machining conditions during turn-milling.
